Shrek Jr - August 2024

Updated: Apr 10

After just 5 days of rehearsals for our youth cast, crew & creative team members, Limelight Performers' Show in a Week company proudly present Shrek Jr!

Shrek The Musical JR. follows an ogre named Shrek who has learned the hard way that “people hate the things they cannot understand.” For many years he has protected himself from the hurtful actions of those who are scared of him by living as a recluse in a cozy cesspit. One day, his peaceful swamp is disturbed by new tenants: fairytale misfits — including Pinocchio, the Ugly Duckling, the Wicked Witch, Peter Pan, the Three Pigs and the Big Bad Wolf — have been banished there by the villainous Lord Farquaad. In order to gain back his land, Shrek makes a deal with Farquaad to rescue the feisty princess Fiona from a tower guarded by a fierce dragon. Setting off with his faithful companion, Donkey, Shrek begins the journey of a lifetime filled with adventure, romance, and hilarity.

With music by Jeanine Tesori, book and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire, Shrek The Musical is based on the Oscar®-winning DreamWorks Animation film and the book Shrek by William Steig. The original Broadway production, starring Brian d'Arcy James as Shrek and Sutton Foster as Fiona, ran for twelve months and received a total of twelve Drama Desk Awards and eight Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical.

We're thrilled to announce our Summer 2024 'show in a week' project - Shrek Jr!

This will be following a similar structure to our previous 'show in a week' productions & workshops, and will run at the Gallery Studio Theatre from 12th - 17th August 2024, with 3 performances on the Saturday.

Spaces will be released to 'Friends' members from midday on Sunday 25th Feb, with any remaining spaces being released to everyone else from midday Sunday 3rd March. We expect demand to be high for this project (all of the performer spaces were sold within 30 minutes of releasing to the public for Matilda Jr!), so would recommend joining as a friend member if you'd like early access, to stand a better chance of getting a space!

You can see how many spaces are left, and secure your spot (on the above dates) at ticketsource.co.uk/limelightperformers

If any extra spaces become available, we'll offer to those signed up already to move between areas first, then will go through the waiting list in the order received. Join our waiting list at https://forms.gle/wNWpb7VDa2iYDt1e9

This will be our fifth 'show in a week' project (following Legally Blonde Jr, Frozen Jr, High School Musical Jr & Matilda Jr), and we're thrilled that this one is our most ambitious yet!

In addition to offering over 30 spaces for performers (aged 9-18, more info below), we're again opening the project to young people who would like to be backstage too! There’ll be a range of roles available in the crew, working alongside & being taught by industry professionals, and this will be open to anyone aged 12-18 to sign up. We're also introducing 'young creative' positions for the first time, for 3 people aged 16-18 to work alongside the creative team putting the show together. All of the participants will receive everything on the list below, but please contact us for any more info!

For just £120 (or £105 early bird rate until end of March 2024) [plus booking fees], you get all of this:

  • Audition / Introduction Workshop before the main week

  • Guaranteed place in the production for everyone who signs up (on stage for 'cast' and backstage for 'crew' and on the team for 'creatives')

  • A full week of sessions with our experienced production team (9am-5pm daily)

  • Book of the script & vocal score to keep

  • Show logo T-Shirt to keep

  • Put on 3 performances for an audience in a full production with professional lighting, sound, staging, props & costumes (simple base costume may need to be provided by performer if required)

  • Pizza ordered in for between shows on the Saturday

  • Individual headshot photos taken (at auditions)

  • Licensed chaperones on site at all times

  • Early drop off / late pick up available (8.30am - 5.30pm)

  • After Party & Video Showing a couple of weeks after the show

Open to anyone in the age brackets to sign up, no experience or membership required!

We'll be holding an audition/induction workshop on Sunday 30th June, 2-5pm, to get to meet everyone and assign the roles for both onstage and backstage (everyone will be included in the show, it's just to work out who gets which role)! This will be group based, nice and informal, and you won't have to learn anything ahead of time. Performers will take part in short singing, acting and dancing workshops - while crew members will get to have a go at each of the technical roles to see what works best! At this session, we'll also take headshot pictures & get sizes for t-shirt orders, and give you the script & access to online content so you can look over it all before the rehearsals begin. We'll have plenty of people on hand at this session too to answer any questions before we get to the big week!

Our Young Creatives will meet with the team before the audition workshop, for an introduction to the project, and then will work alongside the production team through the entire project.

During the main week (12th - 17th August) we'll be based at the Gallery Studio Theatre, and will be rehearsing 9am-5pm each day (with early drop off available from 8.30am, and pick up any time by 5.30pm). We'll have a range of sessions every day, to learn the whole show in the week! While performers are rehearsing their choreography and vocals, the crew members will be getting all of the technical elements ready for the show, and getting to grips with their roles too - we like to make sure everyone's busy all week! The scenery, props, sound and lighting etc will be in place from day 1, so you'll have the unique opportunity to practise everything on the actual stage throughout the week! We'll have a big creative team to work with, and licensed chaperones present at all times. Please note that everyone will need to bring a packed lunch and drinks every day, as for safeguarding reasons we won't be letting people leave the building during the day (facilities will be available for refilling water bottles).

On the Saturday we'll be doing 3 performances of the show to an audience (11.15am, 3pm & 7pm). Between shows 2 & 3, we'll order in pizza for everyone, but you'll still need a packed lunch for between shows 1 & 2. Tickets to be in the audience for these shows will be available to buy nearer the time (available to family members before anyone else)!

A couple of weeks after the show, we'll be having the video showing / after party on 7th September, 6-9pm at the Gallery Studio Theatre, where everyone will be invited to come back and celebrate the show!

Spaces are strictly limited, and available on a first come, first served basis. Payment in full is required on sign up to guarantee your place. If for any reason we have to cancel the project, you'll receive a full refund - however if you choose to cancel your booked place before the audition workshop, you'll receive a 75% refund of any monies paid. After the audition workshop, you'll only receive a refund of 50% if you choose to cancel your booked place. We expect demand to be high for this project, so if the payment is not received within 24 hours, we’ll reserve the right to release the space and make it available to others.
